Lucknow: A heated exchange between two Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators disrupted proceedings during the monsoon session of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Wednesday. The verbal altercation between Rajesh Chaudhary, MLA from Mathura, and Saurabh Srivastava, MLA from Varanasi, occurred during the ‘Vision 2047’ debate and was caught on camera, quickly going viral on social media.
Witnesses reported that the dispute arose over which legislator would speak on behalf of the ruling party. Chaudhary alleged that Srivastava had failed to forward his name to the Speaker. In the footage, Chaudhary can be seen attempting to move towards Srivastava before other lawmakers intervened to prevent escalation.
Sharing the video on his X account, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticised the BJP, remarking, “Badsalooki aur badzubaani hi BJP ki tarakki ki seedi hai, nindniye” (“Misconduct and abusive language are the ladder to success in the BJP. Condemnable!”).
In response, Chaudhary accused Yadav of hypocrisy, pointing to Yadav’s silence when a Muslim cleric made derogatory remarks about his wife, Dimple Yadav, during a television debate last month. “If you have even a shred of shame left, respond to the fanatic who insulted the honour of your household, a woman. We stand with Dimple ji in support of women’s honour,” Chaudhary said.
The cleric in question, Maulana Sajid Rashidi, faced widespread criticism and legal action following his inflammatory comments, with an FIR registered against him.
