New Delhi: On Tuesday, Supreme Court said that the notice to 11 convicts released in the Bilkis Bano case should be published in English and Gujarati newspaper. This came in response to complaints that some of the convicts in Bilkis Bano gang-rape case could not be found at thier address.
Advocate Shobha Gupta, Bilkis Bano’s lawyer, told the bench of Justices K.M. Joseph, B.V. Nagarathna and Ahsanuddin Amanullah that some of the accused in the case could not be served fresh notice as they were not at their residence even when the notice was delivered earlier.
The lawyer of the convicts responded saying they did not receive them become they were not in town.
Earlier, when defence lawyers asked for an adjournment of the case as notices had not reached the convicts, Supreme Court bench said that the case was being deliberately postponed until the retirement of Justice Joseph who headed the bench.
Supreme Court is currently hearing a petition field by Bilkis questioning the Gujarat government's decision to release the convicts in the case.
The matter is now set for hearing on July 10. Justice Joseph, who headed the bench, retires on June 16.
