Haridwar: The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) of Uttarakhand successfully rescued a Kanwariya from drowning in the Ganga River at Haridwar. A video capturing the daring rescue by an SDRF jawan has gone viral on social media, drawing widespread praise.

The video shows the Kanwariya struggling against strong currents before an SDRF official swam through the river to rescue him. The footage concludes with the young man emerging safely from the water.

Uttarakhand Police shared the video on the social media platform X, stating in Hindi, "While taking a bath at Kangra Ghat in Haridwar, a Shiv bhakt from Delhi was caught in the strong current of Ganga. SDRF jawan H C Ashiq Ali then jumped into the Ganga and pulled the young man out safely, saving his life."

The video has garnered admiration online, with one user commenting, "Respect for Jawan," and another saying, "Good work SDRF team, salute Ashiq Ali." A third user praised the communal harmony demonstrated by the rescue, writing, "This is India and the culture of India, where Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, and Christians live like brothers. Now see, a Muslim brother is saving these Kanwariyas by risking his life. It is shameful for those who spread hatred."

The incident highlights the dedication of the SDRF and their commitment to public safety, particularly during the Kanwar Yatra season when thousands of devotees of Lord Shiva, known as Kanwariyas, visit holy sites such as Gangotri, Gaumukh, Haridwar in Uttarakhand, and Sultanganj in Bihar to collect sacred water from the Ganga.

In 2019, a Kanwariya tragically died in Uttar Pradesh's Muzaffarnagar district after falling from a tractor-trolley while dancing to music. The incident occurred on the Haridwar-Delhi national highway near Chapar village.
