New Delhi: Ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia have joined the Congress party.
The Olympians, who were prominent figures in the protests against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Singh, met with senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, before officially joining the party.
Phogat, who recently resigned from her position with the Northern Railways, expressed gratitude to the Congress for standing with them during difficult times. She also voiced her commitment to working for justice and supporting women facing injustice.
Their entry into the Congress is seen as a strategic boost for the party, especially among the significant farming community in Haryana. The Congress is also looking to strengthen its position in seat-sharing negotiations with AAP as the state heads towards the elections.
