Nagpur (UP): The incident of a few locals capturing a Himalayan Griffon Vulture in Nagpur has triggered controversy across social media platforms as the bird is being linked to a character in the Hindu epic Ramayana. The bird is being touted to be Ramayana's character ‘Jatayu’.

According to Ramayana, ‘Jatayu’ was a large bird that had saved Sita’s life by fighting Ravan while endangering his own life.

The capturing of the Himalayan Griffon Vulture triggered social media reports that the bird was ‘Jatayu’ and the images and videos of the bird were used by Times Now Navbharat to add that it proved the reality of Ramayana.

Some of the “News Channels” also aired stories regarding the incident and went on to add that the ‘Jatayu’ had come to see the Ram Mandir which is under construction in Ayodhya – 225 km away from Nagpur.

Time Now Navbharat Channel also added that those who question the existence of Ram should look and the bird for proof.

The channel also stated that the bird had appeared for the first time on the earth after Ramayana - factually incorrect information. AltNews Co-founder and journalist Mohammed Zubair shared several accounts of incidents when the bird was sighted and captured in different parts of the country earlier.

Some of the reports also added that bird had come to meet UP CM Adityanath, a staunch follower of Ram.

IFS Officer Praveen Kaswan also took note of the incident and shared vital information about the bird. He added that the bird can live up to 40-45 years of age and shared a file picture of forest officials releasing the bird after capturing it.

The Himalayan vulture (Gyps himalayensis) or Himalayan griffon vulture is an Old World vulture native to the Himalayas and the adjoining Tibetan Plateau. It is one of the two largest Old World vultures and true raptors. It is listed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List.
