The members of Tableeghi Jamat members who had tested positive for the coronavirus and decided and offered to donate their plasma to treat other COVID-19 patients after they got treated for the virus were lauded across social media platforms on Monday for their gesture.
But do you know what Plasma Donation is, how it is done and how it helps COVID-19 patients in their battle against the Virus? In this article we will read about the Plasma donation, its working and impact.
What is Plasma Donation?
A COVID-19 patient, who has been cured and has become negative now becomes a Plasma Donor for a COVID-19 positive patient.
What is the procedure?
The Plasma donor undergoes a medical examination by a doctor along with Blood Tests to check his/her health. Counseling is done to the donor along with educating him/her about the procedure. The donor then comes to the hospital where he/she donates plasma through Apheresis Procedure.
In Apheresis Procedure the blood is taken in the Apheresis Machine Centrifuged. The Plasma is then separated and collected while the Red Blood Cells, Platelets, White Blood Cells are returned back to the donor.
“The process is completely safe and a One Time Use Circuit is used for each donor. The machine and kits are all imported and have built in safety measures to make the process completely safe for the donors” a video bulletin issued by Karnataka government recently stated.
How it helps COVID-19 positive patient?
The collected plasma is transported to the patient and transfused immediately. The patients are then observed for improvement in the health. These patients are very sick and can be on ventilator support.

Ahmedabad (PTI): A fire broke out at a plastic granules and mould manufacturing factory in Gujarat's Ahmedabad on Sunday morning, an official said.
No casualties were reported in the incident, he said.
The blaze erupted around 8 am at Processo Plast Enterprise in the Bapunagar area, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's Additional Chief Officer (fire) Mihir Rana told PTI.
Thick plumes of smoke were seen billowing into the sky, visible from a considerable distance in the area.
"The unit closed after the night shift and the fire broke out in the morning in the ground floor's storage facility section due to unidentified reasons," Rana said.
Nine fire tenders and several other firefighting vehicles were rushed to the spot, and the blaze was brought under control by 11 am, he said.
Firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to the first floor. However, machinery and plastic materials were damaged on the ground floor, he said, adding that the exact cause of the blaze was under investigation.
