Moodigere: Bapu Nagar resident Ziyan Ahmed (4), who had collected Rs 1,000 from his father to buy a new dress for this Bakrid Festival, donated the money for flood victims in Kodagu by submitting it to CM’s relief fund. Ziyan, a student of UKG in Betani School, is the son of Nadeem Ahmad. He handed over the fund to Altaf Bilgula, president of Peace and Awareness Trust.

Kodagu District was severely hit by devastating rain, which left lakhs of people homeless. In Mangaluru and Kerala, victims have taken shelter at gruel centers. Muslims have decided not to celebrate the Bakrid Festival amid such a national disaster.

The little boy who learned this idea from his parents has transferred the amount to CM’s fund and said “I will not buy new clothes for this Bakrid Festival. I will wear old clothes and celebrate it in a simple way.”

Srinagar (PTI): A fire broke out in a five-storey commercial building near the Lal Chowk city centre here on Saturday, but was doused before it could spread in the congested business hub, officials said.

They said firefighters recovered 19 gas cylinders during the operation and there were no casualties in the incident.

Assistant Director, Fire and Emergency Services, Aqib Mir, said, "The fire originated from the attic portion of the building, which houses the kitchen of a restaurant. The cause of the fire is being ascertained."

"The attic was severely damaged. There were no casualties," he said.

The firefighters managed to contain the damage by swiftly dousing the blaze using a hydraulic platform, Mir said.

During the firefighting operation, 19 gas cylinders were recovered from the spot, he said.

"We have informed the concerned police station," he added.

Mir appealed to people not to store combustible substances at home or commercial places.
