Belthangady: Local police on Monday arrested four people for illegally cutting down Terminalia (tropical almond) and Wild Jack trees at Kaje in Shibaje’s protected forest area here in Belthangady Taluk.
The arrested accused have been identified as Dinesh (51), a resident of Kaje at Shibaje village, and Jitendra (25), a resident of Kaayada at Kalenha village, Umesh (35) of Shibaje, and Rekhya resident Vijay (45).
Dinesh and Jitendra were arrested on Sunday while Umesh and Rekhya were nabbed on Monday, police said.
The accused were presented before the Uppinangady Zonal Forest Officer for further questioning.
After inspecting the felling site, Forest Officer Madhusudan and staff seized the items used for felling the trees and took away one wood chopping machine, axe, and other assets.

Washington (PTI): President Donald Trump is addressing reporters at the White House after he and other top leaders of the United States were evacuated from an annual dinner of White House correspondents on Saturday night after a shooting incident outside the ballroom.
Trump said the suspect was armed with multiple weapons before stopped by Secret Service. One officer was shot, but he was protected by a bulletproof vest.
“He was shot from very close distance with a very powerful gun, and the vest did the job,” Trump said.
