Belthangady: The Education Department has suspended a headmaster after students of a government school were allegedly taken for a study visit in goods vehicles. Police have also registered a case against the drivers of the vehicles involved.
The incident pertains to Government Upgraded Higher Primary School at Balanje village in Belthangady taluk. On February 9, students were taken to a local farm in Nalkoor in a pickup vehicle and a tipper lorry under the leadership of in-charge headmaster Kiran. They were later brought back in the same vehicles.
A video of the children travelling in the goods vehicles went viral on social media, drawing criticism.
Following media reports, officials from the Belthangady Education Department visited the school on February 12 and conducted an inquiry. Based on the preliminary findings, in-charge headmaster Kiran was placed under suspension.
Meanwhile, based on a complaint filed by Dharanendra, a resident of Balanje, a case has been registered at Venur Police Station against pickup driver Naveen and tipper driver Praveen for allegedly transporting students in violation of rules. Further investigation is underway.

New Delhi (PTI): The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to entertain a plea seeking a direction to the Centre and others to frame guidelines for the display of the Ashoka Chakra on the national flag.
A bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi told the petitioner, who appeared in person, to do something constructive for society.
"There is no need to be so emotional about these things. Your idea is good. You have informed the authorities. Now it is for the authorities to see what they want to do," the CJI told the petitioner.
"You do some constructive work for society," the bench said.
The petitioner showed a picture of the Ashoka Chakra installed at a roundabout in Varanasi, but the bench refused to entertain the plea.
