Belthangady: Thousands of dead fish were reportedly found floating at Guruvayankere in Kuvettu village in the Taluk.
The lake at Guruvayankere which spans more than 4 acres is speculated to have been poisoned or undergone a chemical reaction.
In the past couple of weeks, the colour of the water at the lake is said to have undergone visible changes as per the observation made by the locals. However, since Sunday, small fishes were found dead floating near the shore, it is learned.
The 14.71 acres of the lake at Survey No. 15/1 had been a habitat for various fish. However, due to the poisoned waters in the lake, the rarest of fishes among others are reportedly expected to die.
The Belthangady Tahsildar and Kuvettu Gram Panchayat administrative board, development officer have visited the site and collected the water sample for testing, it is learned.
An inquiry is set to be undertaken to verify if poisoned water had joined the large water body and caused the deaths of fishes or if there is another reason behind the phenomenon.
