Case filed against Bajrang Dal leaders for inviting Sharan Pumpwell without police nod
Hiriyadka (Udupi): A case has been registered at Hiriyadka Police Station against Bajrang Dal leaders for inviting Hindutva leader Sharan Pumpwell to their programme without seeking police permission. Pumpwell, who is known for making provocative speeches, was also allowed to address the gathering.
On Wednesday, August 20, Bajrang Dal had organised a torch-lit procession from Kotnakatte in Hiriyadka to Devadiga Bhavan, followed by a public meeting. The inaugural event, scheduled to begin at 6 pm, was reportedly delayed to 7:30 pm and went on till around 9–10 pm.
Police, while granting permission for the event, had instructed the organisers to strictly ensure that no communally provocative speeches were delivered during the programme. Despite this, Pumpwell, against whom a case is already pending for hate speeches made along with rowdy-sheeter Dinesh Mendon and his associates, was invited and given a platform.
The FIR names Bajrang Dal leaders, including Mendon and Subrahmanya Bhat, accusing them of failing to inform Hiriyadka Police in advance about Pumpwell’s participation and address at the event.

Former Assam Cong chief Bhupen Borah joins BJP
Guwahati (PTI): Former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah on Sunday joined the ruling BJP in the presence of its state unit president Dilip Saikia here.
Borah became a BJP member during a function held at the Assam BJP headquarters 'Vajpayee Bhawan'.
Along with him, former Congress worker Sanju Bora, too, joined the saffron party.
Borah had resigned on February 16, with the Congress high command not accepting it and senior leaders rushing to his residence, while Rahul Gandhi also spoke to him.
He had asked for time to reconsider his decision, but the next day, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma went to his residence and announced that he would join the BJP on February 22.
The 126-member Assam assembly is expected to go to polls in March-April.
