Belthangady: In the backdrop of heavy rain that has been lashing Coastal Karnataka and adjoining parts, Charmadi Ghat that links Chikkamagaluru and Mangaluru has been closed for traffic and vehicular movement with immediate effect from Wednesday morning.

The District Administration on Wednesday morning announced the move to close the road for traffic owing to heavy rains. Dakshina Kannada has already been put under red alert for August 7 and 8 due to heavy rain.

The Charmadi Ghat section received heavy downpour of rain on Tuesday night and fire brigade team along with prominent social activist Charmadi Hasanabba were busy clearing the road for vehicular movement.

Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil and other senior police officials also reached the Charmadi Ghat. Police and fire brigade teams helped locals and others to reach to a safe zone.

Bengaluru: A special court for people’s representatives has sentenced Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni and 16 others to life imprisonment in connection with the murder of BJP leader Yogish Goudar.

The verdict was delivered by judge Santhosh Gajanana Bhat. The court had earlier, on Wednesday, held all 17 accused guilty of murdering Goudar, while reserving the quantum of punishment.

On Friday, the court pronounced the sentence, awarding life imprisonment to all the convicted persons in the case.

Yogish Goudar, a BJP member from the Hebballi Zilla Panchayat constituency in Dharwad district, was murdered in 2016.
