Belthangady: Belthangady MLA Harish Poonja on Thursday night stirred controversy when he said that the cow vigilantes groups will deal with the cow thieves with swords, with swords. “If the police department is unable to take action against them we are ready to do everything” he added.

The statement from the BJP MLA came in the wake of an incident reported from Uppinangady on Thursday night when right wing activists attacked two people allegedly illegally transporting cattle. Immediately initiating action against both the parties the local police had arrested Honappa Gowda and Usman for illegally transporting cattle while also arresting Sangh Parivar activists Santosh Poojary, Dhanraj, Lathish and Sharath for allegedly attacking the duo. The four activists were later released on bail by police after hundreds of right-wing activists along with MLA gathered outside police station, demanding their release.

Speaking to reporters outside police station on Thursday night, MLA Harish Poonja added that it was common for public to join together and stop such illegal transport of cattle. He also alleged that the police lathi-charged on public and questioned if the department was supporting the cow thieves.

“The stand of police department in these cases has become questionable. They are saving the cow thieves and are harassing people who tried to stop the cow thieves. We are ready to lay down our lives for the sake of cows and for the sake of Hindutva. I am a Hindu first and an MLA later” Harish told reporters.

“If the police cannot take appropriate actions against them then we are ready to handle the issue. We know how to deal with these cow thieves. We know how to reply them with their own swords which they use for stealing the cows” he further added.
