Mangaluru: The Navaratri celebrations in the city, organized by the Kudroli Sri Gokarnanatheshwara Temple, were closed with ‘shobhayatre’, the grand procession, and immersion of the idol of Goddess Sharada Thursday morning.

The idol was immersed in the waters of the Kudroli Temple ‘pushkarni’ (lake) at 9 am on Thursday, closing the event organized by the Temple, known for its grand Dasara celebrations every year in Mangaluru.

The ‘shobhayatre’, with the idols of different gods as well as tableaux of various sorts, was started after the ‘mahapooja’ at the Kudroli Temple late Wednesday evening. The procession passed on the major roads and streets of Mangaluru city, before returning to the temple premises.

Thousands of people, both citizens and artistes, participated in the grand procession of the Kudroli Temple. The renowned ‘pilivesha’ artistes (tiger dancers) of the coastal belt were a major attraction with the tableaux, as usual.

The idols of Lord Ganesha, the goddesses Adishakti and Navadurgas were immersed in the pushkarni waters. Following a conventional pooja of Goddess Sharada, the idol was also immersed in the waters of the temple lake.

Due to the outbreak of Covid-19, the annual ‘shobhayatre’ for Dasara in Mangaluru had been withheld the last two years. This year, however, the grand procession was again held night-long, from Wednesday evening till Thursday morning, much to the delight of the people.
