*Dharmasthala mass burials: SIT files case against complainant-witness, names him as primary accused*
Belthangady: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Dharmasthala mass burial case has reportedly filed a case against the complainant-witness CN Chinnaiah under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, identifying him as the primary accused.
While the inquest of the sites where the bones were found is yet to be carried out, the complainant is accused of perjury by providing false information to the court and giving rise to confusion regarding the case, sources have said.
Chinnaiah has given his statement in court under BNS Section 164 earlier, but has now given a contrary statement before the SIT members. He has made his new statement in court too and a fresh round of investigation is being carried out on the basis of the second statement in court. Sources have also said that the new cases are filed under BNS Sections 227, 228, 229, 230, 231, 236, 240, 240, 248 and 336.
In addition, the inquest at the residence of Sowjanya movement activist Mahesh Shetty Timarodi in Ujire, where the complainant had taken shelter during the investigation in Dharmasthala, has been completed, with the police confiscating Chinnaiah’s things from Timarodi’s house.
The court has reportedly said that Chinnaiah’s statement and matters related to the case filed against him are kept confidential as requested by the SIT officers. It has also said that the accused is granted witness protection in spite of the case against him.

New Delhi (PTI): Voter base in nine states and Union territories has shrunk by more than 1.70 crore following the publication of final electoral rolls as part of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR), according to official data.
The data shared by the chief electoral officers of Gujarat, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Goa and Kerala on Saturday showed that their combined voter base stood at over 21.45 crore before the SIR exercise began on October 27 last year.
It shrunk to 19.75 crore after publication of their final electoral rolls this week, a net change of over 1.70 crore electors.
While the exercise, which kept the Election Commission in the spotlight, has been completed in Bihar, it is currently underway in 12 states and Union territories covering nearly 60 crore electors.
The remaining 40 crore electors will be covered in 17 states and five Union territories.
In Assam, a "special revision", instead of SIR, was completed on February 10.
Due to a variety of reasons, the SIR in the nine states and three Union territories have seen frequent tweaking in schedules.
As in Bihar, political parties have approached the Supreme Court challenging the exercise in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
