Belthangady: An elderly man lost ₹49,200 after his ATM card was swapped by strangers at the Gerukatte Canara Bank ATM on October 2.

The incident occurred when Abubakar (71), a resident of Gerukatte, was withdrawing cash from the ATM. Two unidentified individuals entered the ATM kiosk, offering assistance, which Abubakar declined. Despite his refusal, the strangers remained there.

Two days later, Abubakar discovered that his ATM card was not functioning properly. Upon checking with the bank, it was revealed that ₹49,200 had been withdrawn from his account using the card. It is suspected that the strangers had swapped his card with an old one during their interaction at the ATM.

A complaint has been registered at the Belthangady police station, and an investigation is underway.
