Uppinangady: Panic gripped local residents on Monday morning when gas tanker reportedly started leaking gas after the lid of the tanker undid itself here in Uppinangady.
According to the reports the tanker belonging to ‘Total Gas’ was on its way to Hassan from Mangaluru when the incident took place on Monday. After the lid came off, the gas started evaporating and mixing into the air triggering panic among locals.
An announcement on the microphone of a local mosque was made immediately after the incident, warning people against setting fire anywhere in the vicinity and National Highway was closed for traffic movement.
Local police reached the spot and controlled the gas leakage in over-an-hour operation.
The locals however, expressed anguish against Fire Brigade alleging that despite being informed about the incident along with the police, the fire brigade team from Puttur reached the spot nearly after 90 minutes, by when the gas was contained already. Puttur is 12 kms away from Uppinangady.

Mumbai (PTI): An empty double-decker electric bus was gutted in a fire during servicing at a BEST depot in Mumbai's Kurla area on Sunday, officials said, adding that nobody was injured.
The blaze broke out inside the Kurla BEST bus depot near Kanakia Building at 4.14 pm, according to preliminary information from the Mumbai Fire Brigade.
The parked bus was unoccupied at the time of the incident.
Fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot and brought the blaze under control. The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, they said.
No injuries were reported in the incident, officials added.
The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) Undertaking has hired 50 electric double-decker buses from Switch Mobility in its fleet of around 2,700 buses.
