Bhatkal: Police have arrested a man for allegedly robbing his own 92-year-old grandmother by posing as a thief. The accused, identified as 46-year-old Tajammul Hassan Askeri, was taken into custody on Wednesday, March 19, following an investigation led by Bhatkal Town Police Sub-Inspector Naveen Naik.
The incident took place on March 17, when the elderly woman reported that an unidentified man had entered her house during the early hours of the day and snatched away her gold ornaments. The crime occurred when the women in the house were engaged in morning prayers, and the men had gone to the mosque for prayers after Sehri, the pre-dawn meal during Ramadan.
According to the victim, the assailant covered her mouth and attempted to strangle her when she tried to call for help. CCTV footage from the house revealed that the crime took place within a span of four minutes, with the suspect entering and leaving uninterrupted.
Following the robbery, the accused himself had lodged a police complaint on behalf of his grandmother, pretending to assist the authorities in tracking down the culprit. However, as the investigation progressed, the police uncovered his involvement, leading to his arrest.
Sub-Inspector Naveen Naik, speaking to Vartha Bharati confirmed the arrest, stating that Tajammul was arrested on Wednesday and was set to be produced before the court later in the evening.
Family sources revealed that after committing the crime, the accused initially remained at home but fled two days later when he feared that the police were closing in on him. They also disclosed that this was not his first such attempt, claiming that he had previously engaged in similar acts but the family had chosen not to report them, opting instead to settle the matters privately.
The incident, which took place during the holy month of Ramadan, caused panic in the town, with residents sharing the news widely on social media and urging others to remain vigilant against robberies.
Sources also added that CCTV footage around the house were one of the reasons that helped the police team in identifying the accused.

Panaji (PTI): As part of a crackdown against tourist establishments violating laws and safety norms in the aftermath of the Arpora fire tragedy, Goa authorities on Saturday sealed a renowned club at Vagator and revoked the fire department NOC of another club.
Cafe CO2 Goa, located on a cliff overlooking the Arabian Sea at Vagator beach in North Goa, was sealed. The move came two days after Goya Club, also in Vagator, was shut down for alleged violations of rules.
Elsewhere, campaigning for local body polls, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal said the fire incident at Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub at Arpora, which claimed 25 lives on December 6, happened because the BJP government in the state was corrupt.
An inspection of Cafe CO2 Goa by a state government-appointed team revealed that the establishment, with a seating capacity of 250, did not possess a no-objection certificate (NOC) of the Fire and Emergency Services Department. The club, which sits atop Ozrant Cliff, also did not have structural stability, the team found.
The Fire and Emergency Services on Saturday also revoked the NOC issued to Diaz Pool Club and Bar at Anjuna as the fire extinguishers installed in the establishment were found to be inadequate, said divisional fire officer Shripad Gawas.
A notice was issued to Nitin Wadhwa, the partner of the club, he said in the order.
Campaigning at Chimbel village near Panaji in support of his party's Zilla Panchayat election candidate, Aam Aadmi Party leader Kejriwal said the nightclub fire at Arpora happened because of the "corruption of the Pramod Sawant-led state government."
"Why this fire incident happened? I read in the newspapers that the nightclub had no occupancy certificate, no building licence, no excise licence, no construction licence or trade licence. The entire club was illegal but still it was going on," he said.
"How could it go on? Couldn't Pramod Sawant or anyone else see it? I was told that hafta (bribe) was being paid," the former Delhi chief minister said.
A person can not work without bribing officials in the coastal state, Kejriwal said, alleging that officers, MLAs and even ministers are accepting bribes.
