Mangaluru: In connection with the mob lynching that occurred on Sunday, April 27th, in Kudupu on the outskirts of the city, three police officers, including the Inspector of Mangaluru Rural Police Station, Shivakumar K. R., have been suspended.
Ashraf, a native of Kerala, was fatally assaulted by a mob at a cricket match venue. Public outcry arose, alleging that the police department did not initially treat the case with due seriousness. Subsequently, the police arrested 20 individuals in connection with the crime.
Based on charges of dereliction of duty, the suspended officers are Inspector Shivakumar K. R., Head Constable Chandra P., and Police Constable Yallalinga, all from the Mangaluru Rural Police Station.
On April 27th, a person named Deepak had informed the police via phone about a group of players and spectators assaulting an unidentified individual at the Kudupu grounds where a cricket match was taking place. This information was received by the Inspector and staff of the Mangaluru Rural Police Station. Despite having knowledge of the incident, it is alleged that they did not inform their superiors about the mob attack.
Consequently, the case was initially registered as a UDR (Unnatural Death Report) and was later reclassified as a mob lynching case. The three police personnel have been suspended for alleged gross negligence in failing to bring the information about the mob lynching to the attention of higher authorities, despite being aware of it.
