Udupi: Two tourists who were critically injured in a boat accident near Kodibengre Beach on Sunday afternoon have died, police said.
The deceased have been identified as Shankarappa (22) and Sindhu (23). Another tourist, Disha (26), is in critical condition, while Dharamraj (26) is said to be stable. All four are natives of Saraswathipuram in Mysuru district and were working at a call centre there.
According to police, a group of 14 tourists had arrived in Udupi on a leisure trip. They boarded a tourist boat from Kodibengre Delta Beach for a sea ride. Around 12 noon, near the Hangarakatta shipbuilding area at the river-sea confluence point, the boat suddenly capsized.
All 14 passengers were thrown into the water. It is learnt that only a few of them were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident. Nearby boat operators and locals rushed to the spot and rescued the tourists, bringing them safely to the shore.
Four of the rescued tourists were in serious condition and were immediately shifted to a hospital in Udupi. Despite treatment, two of them succumbed to their injuries, police said.
Malpe police have registered a case and further investigation is under way.

Kalaburagi: Four men have been arrested in Kalaburagi on charge of hacking a man with lethal weapons and pelting stones at him under the limits of Station Bazaar Police Station recently.
According to police sources, Anand Jalak Shinde (34), Ashitosh Jalak Shinde (30), Imran Mehboob Sheikh (28) and Sohaib Anwar Qureshi have been arrested. The men are accused of the brutal murder of Syed Mehboob, a resident of Station Bazaar Upper Line Hamalawadi in the city.
An FIR was filed by the Station Bazaar Police Station based on a complaint given by Syed Ismail, father of the deceased Syed Mehboob.
Following quick probe, the police team successfully arrested the suspects within 24 hours. The arrested men were produced in court and have been sent to judicial custody.
The City Police Commissionerate has appreciated in an official release the police team’s quick solving of the murder case and arrest of the four men accused of murdering Syed Mehboob.
