Mangaluru: In an incident reported from the Mangaluru City Police jurisdiction, about 1725KGs of dangerous explosives were recovered stored in a room of Gandhi sons in Bunder locality in the city. The accused was arrested by police.

The accused has been identified as Anand Gatti, a resident of Mudipu in Bantwal Taluk of Dakshina Kannada.

400 KG Sulphur Powder, 350 KG Potassium Nitrate, 50 KG Barium nitrate, 395 KG Potassium Chloride, 260 KG various kind of Aluminum powder, 30 KG lead bullets, 240 KG Charcoal, 140 shotguns including 100 Air rails were seized by the police while arresting the accused.

The total value of the items seized is estimated to be 1.11 lacs rupees.

The local police led by DCP Law and Order Hariram Shankar raided the room based on a tip-off and made the recovery.

According to the reports, the accused Anand Gatti runs a gun shop in Bunder but his gun shop permit had nothing to do with the explosives found at the storage. Storage of explosives was illegal in the room and was a residential area.

Anand was produced before the court and was sent to 10-day custody. Police in a statement has said that they will investigate the matter closely and about the accused history and connections.

Speaking at a press conference, Mangaluru Police Commissioner Shashi Kumar said due to Naxal presence in Mangaluru, Udupi, and Chikkamagaluru region, the seizure of explosives in huge quantities is worrying and a challenge for internal security. He said there are chances of miscreants misusing these explosives and can be a threat to the law and order of the region.

Belagavi (Karnataka) (PTI): Two people were killed, and another was severely injured after a goods vehicle transporting poultry birds allegedly rammed into a stationary truck on a national highway in Belagavi in the early hours of Tuesday, police said.

The deceased have been identified as Wasim (28) and Mubarak (22), both natives of Shivamogga district, they said.

The driver of the vehicle, Basavaraj Eerappa Hanchinamani (37), suffered critical injuries and has been admitted to a hospital, police said.

According to police, the accident occurred when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, allegedly due to drowsiness, and crashed into a truck parked along the highway.

The goods vehicle was en route from Kolhapur to Sorab in Shivamogga district, carrying poultry. Several chickens were also killed in the impact, a senior police officer said.

Police personnel from the Hirebagewadi Police Station visited the spot and conducted an inspection.

Injured people and the bodies of the deceased were shifted to a hospital, police added.
