Mangaluru: Local Police has arrested nine people in connection with the recent attack on a auto-rickshaw driver near Neermarga. The police team investigating the matter made the arrests on Tuesday afternoon.

The arrested accused have been identified as Nithin Poojary, Dhanraj, Shivababdh Achari, Ganesh, Jeevan Poojary, Santhosh Poojary, Pranesh Poojary, Dheeraj Safaiya and Raghavendra Poojary all local residents.

On October 17, an auto-driver Santosh was attacked by unidentified assailants wherein he had sustained severe injuries and was admitted to a private hospital for treatment.

According to the reports Santosh was attacked when he was on his way to home on October 17. He was stopped by two accused who came on black two-wheeler. The accused then stabbed Santosh on his hands and legs and escaped from the crime scene after the attack, leaving Santosh in the pool of blood. Santosh was rushed to hospital by locals. He is currently recovering at the hospital.

Initial investigation has revealed that the accused and Santosh were all part of a organisation and Santosh had parted ways from the organisation two years ago due to conflict of interest. Santosh reportedly had issues with the ideology of the organisation and was opposing it. The opposition of the organisation had triggered the attack on October 17, police sources added.

Dhanbad (Jharkhand) (PTI): At least four workers died after being buried under coal slurry in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district on Saturday, a police official said.

The incident took place at Moonidih coal washery in the command area of Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL).

"Bodies of all four workers were dug out of debris during a rescue operation," Putki police station in-charge Waqar Hussain told PTI.

The incident took place when coal slurry was being loaded into trucks by workers, during which a large chunk of slurry fell and trapped several workers underneath, officials said.

The deceased have been identified as Manik Bauri, Dinesh Bauri, Deepak Bauri, and Hemlal Gope.

Meanwhile, the family members of the deceased and local villagers placed the bodies in front of the washery gate and began a protest.

They demanded compensation, jobs for dependents and action against those responsible for the incident.

Police and administration officials are trying to pacify the protesters, an official said.
