Mangaluru: Activists of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) were detained by the city police on Thursday as they attempted to lay siege on the residence of Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel during a protest against the BJP Parliamentarian for failing to get grants for the district from the Central government.

The activists, led by NSUI District President Suhan Alva, staged a protest shouting slogans against the BJP and gathered outside the MP's house near Urwa but were stopped by the local policemen, who had put up barricades there.

Alva, speaking on the occasion, said that development works in Dakshina Kannada had taken a blow since Kateel had taken charge as local MP. "The number of schools and colleges is high, yet youth have no employment opportunities. The state is being deprived of its due share from the Central government. We are denied the returns due for the taxes we pay. What, then, is Kateel's contribution to the district?" asked the President.

The NSUI protesters are also learned to have objected to being stopped by the Urwa Police team led by Inspector Bharati in their attempt to lay siege on Kateel's house.

They were taken into custody by the police for trying to move ahead and lay siege on the MP's residence, thrusting aside the barricades.

Bareilly (UP), Nov 24: Three people died when their car fell into the Ramganga river from a partially constructed bridge here on Sunday, police said, adding that they suspect the driver was misled by its navigation system into taking the unsafe route.

The accident occurred around 10 am on the Khalpur-Dataganj road when the victims were travelling from Bareilly to Dataganj in the Badaun district, they said.

"Earlier this year, floods had caused the front portion of the bridge to collapse into the river, but this change had not been updated in the system," Circle Officer Ashutosh Shivam said.

The driver was using a navigation system and did not realise that the bridge was unsafe, driving the car off the damaged section, the police said.

There were no safety barriers or warning signs on the approach to the damaged bridge, leading to the fatal accident, Shivam said.

Upon receiving information, police teams from Faridpur, Bareilly and Dataganj police station rushed to the spot. They recovered the vehicle and the bodies from the river, Shivam added.

The circle officer said that bodies had been sent for post-mortem. Further investigation into the matter is underway.
