Mangaluru: Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Friday staged a massive protest against the arrest of its activists in case related to alleged pro-Pakistan slogans at the Panchayath elections result counting day earlier last year.

Thousands of protesters joined the call of the party to SP (Superintendent of Police) Office Chalo protest rally on Friday afternoon. Amidst beefed up security deployment in the city near SP’s office, and with top police officials monitoring the situation, the police barricaded the rally and urged protesters not to head towards the SP.

The protest rally was stopped near Clock Tower as the protesters sat down on dharna and shouted slogans against police, BJP, and Sangh Parivar right-wing groups.

They further slammed BJP and Narendra Modi, targeting them over Modi’s visit to Pakistan wherein he had lunch at former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif’s residence.

SDPI leaders also demanded the arrest of Sangh Parivar and RSS activists who they alleged had shouted pro-Pakistan slogans to disturb the peace and harmony.

Koppal: Tension prevailed in Halwarti village of Koppal taluk after a clash reportedly broke out between members of Dalit and upper-caste communities over the hoisting of an Ambedkar flag during the Beeralingeshwara fair.

According to police, a verbal argument between youths from the two communities escalated into a physical confrontation, leading to unrest in the village.

In a related development, it has been alleged that members of the upper-caste community entered the house of a Dalit youth, identified as Gavisiddappa Hosamani, damaged the door and vandalised the front portion of the house.

As a precautionary measure, additional police personnel have been deployed in the village to maintain law and order.

Police said a complaint has been registered at the Koppal Rural Police Station and five persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. Further investigation is under way.
