Udupi, November 30: Kannada and Culture and District Minister Dr Jayamala presented the Karnataka Rajyotsava award to ‘Maddale Mantrika’ Hiriyadka Gopalaraya of Yakshagana who will complete his birth centenary on December 15, at his house ‘Sitarama Nilaya’ at Ontibetta near Hiriyadka on Friday.
Due to his age issues, he did not participate in Rajyotsava award presentation programme held in Bengaluru on November 28. So, the Minister who arrived in Udupi today, has gone to the house of Gopalaraya at Hiriyadka and handed over the award to the artiste.
“It’s the respect of our government and it is my privilege to present it to you”, the Minister said while presenting the award consisting of a shawl, fruits, citation and gold gift. Deputy Commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis, officers of Kannada and Culture department were present on the occasion.
99-year-old Gopalaraya asked Jayamala, who is also an artiste to sit beside him and sung Yakshagana songs, and played the Maddale to surprise the minister.

New Delhi (PTI): The Delhi Police has arrested five of a family for allegedly assaulting a police officer and snatching his service pistol during a raid in the Sultanpuri area, an official said on Wednesday.
The accused are Rajender (50), his sons Ritik (24), Sachin (29), Abhishek (26), and his daughter Komal (22).
The incident occurred on September 2, when a team from the Anti-Narcotics Task Force arrested Alka, wife of Rajender, for possession of heroin, police said.
During the raid, Alka's family members attacked a police officer with sticks and bricks and snatched his service pistol, mobile phone, and wallet. However, the officer managed to recover his service pistol, they said.
Police said that an FIR was registered and an investigation was launched.
Acting on a tip-off, police arrested the accused, absconding since the incident, from a flat in Raghubir Nagar in Delhi.
