Mangaluru, August 09: INTUC leader Punith Shetty alleged that the supporters of youth Congress district president Mithun Rai have attacked him during a programme conducted by the district Congress.

Today, the Congress organized Quit India commemorative programme at Town Hall. During the programme, Mithun Rai supporters have attacked him in front of the stage and snatched his chain, he alleged.

“Mithun Rai’s followers have attacked me. Being the president of the Indian National Trade Union Congress, I have been involved in social service. Around ten days ago, Mithun Rai had lodged a complaint against me. Avinash, Girish Alva and others have behaved like goondas. They have snatched my chain. Mithun Rai is facing three cases. But he is given a gun man for security”, Shetty said.

The prime minister noted that the mantra of Vande Mataram gave power and inspiration to the entire country during freedom struggle

"It is a matter of pride for us that we are witnessing the historic occasion of Vande Mataram completing 150 years," he said.

"When Vande Mataram completed 100 years, the nation was chained by the Emergency. At that time, the Constitution was throttled and those who lived and died for patriotism were pushed behind prison bars. The Emergency was a dark chapter in our history. Now we have the opportunity to restore the greatness of Vande Mataram. And I believe this opportunity should not be allowed to pass," Modi said.
