Kaup: On Monday, the Navy began its rescue operation to save the ‘Koramandal Express Tug’, which was in imminent danger after being caught at sea near the Kaup lighthouse. The 9 staff members who were on board the stranded vessel were successfully rescued in a joint rescue operation conducted by the Navy and the Indian Coast Guard. 

The 9 staff members - who were working on the ‘Koramandal Supporter 9’ shuttle belonging to the KEI R.S.O.R Company, which had received the contract to connect an underground Pipe for crude oil from Mangaluru’s M.R.P.L Company – were rescued by in the joint operation carried out by the Indian Coast Guard and Navy on Monday morning.

The rescue operation was conducted using a speed boat, shuttle, and helicopter. Two of the stranded staff members were rescued through the helicopter, while the remaining 7 were rescued using the speed boat, and taken to the N.M.P.T port on a Coast Guard’s Shuttle-ship. A team of doctors were stationed at N.M.P.T, ready to conduct an overall medical examination of the rescued staff. 

The 9 staff workers belonging to the tug which cooperates, aides in the arrival and departure of boats from the new Mangaluru port at Panambur, had crashed into a boulder 5 Nautical Miles away from the Kaup Lighthouse and inadvertently become stuck between the boulders. Adverse weather conditions had hindered rescue operations on Saturday. The rescue operations could not be undertaken even on Sunday. In the background of this, on Monday morning, the helicopter belonging to the Navy arrived from Kochi and aided in the rescue of the 9 stranded staff members, it is learned.

The staff on board the stranded vessel, Captain Mullah Khan, Second Captain Gaurav Kumar, Shantanu A.V, Rahul, Deepak, Prashant, Tushar, Lakshmi Narayan, and Rood Ahmed, are the rescued individuals.

Beirut: Lebanon’s has moved to underline its independent position in ongoing regional developments, amid attempts to link the country to the broader conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel.

President Joseph Aoun, while announcing the appointment of former US ambassador Simon Karam as Lebanon’s representative in talks with Israel, made it clear that Karam would be the sole representative for Lebanon and that there would be no substitute.

The move comes in response to what the Lebanese officials see as efforts by Iran to tie Lebanon’s situation to the wider regional conflict. Iran had indicated that there would be no ceasefire involving the US, Israel and Iran unless it also included a ceasefire in Lebanon.

Some groups, including Hezbollah and its supporters, had expressed support for linking the situations, citing concerns that the Lebanese government has limited leverage in negotiations with Israel. Lebanon is not formally a party to the conflict, and its army is considered weak.

However, others, including Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, have opposed this approach. They view Iran’s stance as an attempt to influence Lebanon’s internal affairs and see it as undermining the country’s sovereignty.

Officials backing the government’s position say the move is aimed at reaffirming Lebanon’s sovereignty and ensuring that decisions about peace and ceasefire within the country are not dictated externally.

They also see it as a safeguard, so that any breakdown in talks between the US, Israel and Iran does not automatically lead to renewed conflict in Lebanon.
