Mangaluru: New Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada District Sindhu Roopesh on Wednesday visited the Pachanady dumping yard and took stock of the conditions at Mandara and Pachanady residential areas where the dump has slumped in making the lives of residents miserable for more than a month now.

Sindhu first reached Pachanady and then visited Mandara village. She then also visited the interim housing society provided to the victims at Kulashekar Housing Board and met the families who have lost their homes due to the garbage slump.

Speaking about the issue Sindhu urged the officials to work in both directions, one of clearing the slumped garbage from the area and the other being rehabilitating the victim families. He also asked the officials to prepare a detailed report which should be presented before the state government.

She was accompanied by Mangalore Municipal Corporation Commissioner Mohammed Nazeer, Joint Commissioner Gayatri Nayak and other officials and activists during her visit.

Belthangady: A 19-year-old girl from Belalu village, who had attempted suicide at home by consuming poison, has reportedly died at a hospital in Mangaluru.

The deceased, Rama, was the daughter of Dinesh and Revathi Naik of Mayada Balemandikallu in Belalu village, Belthangady taluk, and a II PUC student at Vamapadavu College.

Rama’s attempt to commit suicide is being linked to personal matters, as she is known to have loved a youngster.

On the night of April 19, she reportedly consumed rat poison at her residence and was admitted to a hospital in Mangaluru for treatment. After 10 days of treatment, she died on April 30 after failing to respond to medical care.

A case has been registered at the Dharmasthala Police Station, and investigation is underway.
