Bantwal: A team of youngsters made a desperate attempt to save a youngster who had tried to drown in River Nethravathi, earning appreciation from the people.

Nishanth, a resident of Kolakeeru in the taluk, jumped off the old bridge in Panemangaluru on Sunday. Seeing this, Mohammad and three other youngsters, who live nearby, jumped into the water and got Nishanth out of the water. Arif Highway tried to help Nishanth with artificial respiration technique and the video of the attempt has gone viral on social media.

The youngsters were unable to save Nishanth, but the humanitarian attempt of the group – Mohammad, Arif, Shameer, Thouseef and Zaheed of Goodinabali and Mukhtar of Akkarangadi – is being appreciated by the people.

“I got into the river on learning of the youngster jumping into the river. With the help of three others, I got the youngster out of the water too. Earlier too, we have prevented people from committing suicide by jumping into the river, while in some instances, we could only get the bodies out of the water,” said Mohammad, pointing out, “Life is extremely valuable, and way beyond the boundaries of caste and religion.”

Srinagar (PTI): Property worth Rs 1 crore belonging to a notorious drug peddler was on Saturday attached in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar, police said.

A double-storey house on eight marlas of land situated at Wantpora Eidgah, belonging to Basit Bilal Dar, a notorious drug peddler, valued at approximately Rs 1 crore, a police spokesperson said.

He said Dar is involved in two cases registered under various sections of the NDPS Act.

During investigation, it was established that the accused had acquired the said property through illicit proceeds generated from drug trafficking activities, the spokesperson said.

Consequently, the property was attached under the provisions of the NDPS Act. The attachment proceedings were conducted in the presence of the two independent witnesses, strictly in accordance with the prescribed legal procedures, he said.

As per the attachment order, the owner has been restrained from selling, leasing, transferring, altering, or creating any third-party interest in the property till further orders, the spokesperson added.
