Belthangady: A case has been registered at the Belthangady Police Station against the owner and staff of Prithvi Jewellers, located near Santhekatte, for allegedly assaulting three schoolboys on Monday afternoon.
The injured students are currently undergoing treatment at the Belthangady Government Hospital. The primary accused has been identified as Ashok, the owner of the jewellery store.
According to the complaint, the three boys, natives of Venur in the taluk, had skipped school on Monday and visited the weekly fair at the Belthangady market. After returning from the fair, they sat near the Prithvi Jewellers shop and were playing on their mobile phones. The accused reportedly questioned them about their identities and, upon learning that they were Muslims, allegedly abused them using religious slurs.
The complaint further states that Ashok took the boys into a room, physically assaulted them, and locked them inside. One of the students managed to escape and fled the spot. His parents reportedly found him later that night after searching for him.
The jewellery store owner and staff are also accused of verbally abusing and arguing with the parents when they visited the shop to question them about the alleged assault on their children.
Belthangady Police registered a case against Ashok on Tuesday and recorded the students’ statements at the Belthangady Government Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.
SDPI Belthangady leader Akbar visited the hospital and inquired about the children’s health. Condemning the incident, he said the children were assaulted solely on religious grounds and urged the police to take strict action against the accused.
