Mangaluru: Former Karnataka Minister and Senior Congress leader B Ramanath Rai on Sunday held CM Yediyurappa responsible for the death of two people in police firing in Mangaluru on Thursday. Rai also called for judicial inquiry into the case by a sitting Karnataka High Court Judge.

Speaking at a press conference in the city, Rai noted that the people have been protesting across the nation against the NRC and CAA and that the state government’s move to clamp section 144 and not allowing people to protest was wrong and held CM Yediyurappa and Home Minister responsible for the consequence which turned out in the city on Thursday.

“The deaths of two people who died in police firing in the city was a murder under the government’s watch. Clashes and violence can be controlled by firing in the air and resorting to lathi charge” he said while adding that the Congress party condemned the police action on protesters.

Rai also asserted that the state government should allow leaders of state opposition to meet the families of victims but the Yediyurappa government made an anti-democratic move by not allowing Siddaramaiah from meeting the family.

He was referring to the incident when Siddaramaiah was not allowed to enter the port city and was sent back from airport on Saturday, when the leader of opposition in Karnataka assembly arrived in the city to meet families of Abdul Jaleel and Nousheen who died in police firing on Thursday.

“Congress leaders never make provocative statements or speeches. Those who have cases of hate speeches registered against them in police stations are not Congress leaders but leaders of communal political parties” Rai stated.

DK Congress President Harish Kumar, MLC Ivan D’Souza, MCC member Shashidhar Hegde, Neveen D’Souza, Abdur Rauf, Congress leader T K Sudhir, Neeraj Pal and others were present in the press conference.
