Mangaluru: The Indian Design School hosted its second ‘Design Celebration’ on Saturday, 31st August 2019 – a monthly event where it invites award-winning, celebrated architects and interior designers from across the country for conducting talks on design, projects and professional practice.

“It serves as a platform where exchange of ideas and knowledge takes place to inspire young and creative minds to achieve excellence. The talk is generally followed by the presentation of the event sponsors” a statement from the school said.

On Saturday, Ar. Chethan Kamath was invited as the guest speaker, with ‘AK Group’ as the event sponsor. Chethan Kamath is an award-winning practicing architect and interior designer. He is the founder and Chief Architect of Planz Unlimited – Architects and a member of COA. A graduate from Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), he has been practicing independently from past 18 years – giving him a strong insight into various aspects of project conceptualisation, design development and detailing. He won the Ultratech Award for Best Architect in residential design for two consecutive years.

The theme of the event was “Practical Approach to Interior Design in Academics”, where Kamath presented some of his best projects and the challenges behind each with a twist of academics in it. “The talk provided the students with an in-depth understanding on materials, construction management and project execution. A question-answer session was conducted at the end of the talk which gave the students a further clarity on finer details of design” a press release by the school stated.

The Talk was followed by the presentation of AK Group by Dr. Prashanth M.A. (Director of AK Group), who gave a detailed information on the plethora of products offered by the company to architects and interior designers. The presentation was followed by another question-answer session on the request of the students to know more about the details of their new products and those yet to be launched. The event was also joined by Naushad A.K., director of the AK Group of Companies.

The AK Group conducted the ‘Carpentry Workshop’ for the students of IDS in the afternoon where the carpenters performed a live demonstration of the construction of panel and flush doors. This was followed by the students constructing similar doors in groups, under the aid and supervision of the carpenters. The students found the workshop to be a “never-before-experience packed with fun, learning and practical experience.”

The event concluded with Kamath, Dr. Prashanth and Naushad A.K. being awarded the certificate of appreciation by Chairman – Ar. Mohammed Nissar, Director – Dr. Nafeesa Shirin and Principal – Ar. Ramnath Nayak of Indian Design School.

Mumbai (PTI): The Bombay High Court on Wednesday dismissed gangster Abu Salem’s plea for immediate release, claiming he had served 25 years in jail in India mandated under the terms of his extradition from Portugal.

In his plea, Salem had contended that if remission for good behaviour is included, then his 25-year jail term is complete and hence he ought to be freed.

A bench of Justices A S Gadkari and Kamal Khata said it cannot hold that the 25-year jail term is complete, as it would be premature to say anything at this stage on the point of remission.

The court relied on a Supreme Court judgment wherein it was held that remission of a prisoner would need to be calculated a month before the applicant’s release.

“Therefore, the present petition (filed by Salem) is dismissed,” the court said.

A copy of the detailed order is yet to be made available.

Salem’s plea, filed through advocate Farhana Shah, had said that when he was extradited from Portugal in 2005, India had assured that he would not be handed over the death penalty in any case and that he would not be imprisoned for more than 25 years.

The government had opposed his plea, noting that Salem has spent only 19 years in jail and that a decision on his premature release was pending.

Salem was convicted in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts case and sentenced to life imprisonment.
