Udupi: An incident of serial theft was reported from the Public Welfare Department Udupi unit residential quarters near Mission Compound on Sunday night, with the thieves stealing cash and jewelry worth lakhs of rupees.

Staff members from other government departments too reside in the quarters. Many families were reportedly out of town, having traveled to their native places for the two-day holiday during the weekend. Six houses at the quarters were seen affected by the serial theft incident.

The thieves broke into and stole gold jewelry from two houses. They also stole cash from two more houses, while an attempt at theft was made in two other houses, sources have said.
