Mangaluru: The Indian Design School had organised a “Live Project Client Jury” for their students as a part of their design studio for providing a hands-on understanding of designer-client interactions. IDS is among the first interior design college across India that has conducted such a unique way of viva-voce for their students.
Jury is an important part of any design studio – be it interior design or architecture – where students present and justify their designs and ideas to their faculty. Generally, design juries are headed by architects and interior designers and not by clients, who usually are from non-design backgrounds. Here is where IDS took upon the chance to change the general idea about design juries. The students were provided with a live site and were asked to design the interiors for it. The site was an apartment unit belonging to Dr. Prashanth M.A. This was a first-of-its-kind jury where the students were provided with a live site and the jury was headed by Dr. Prashanth himself along with his wife. This jury gave the students a wide exposure to professional practice even before the beginning of their professional careers.
Both Dr. Prashanth and his wife was delighted with the jury and by the professional conduct and approach of the students. He not only congratulated the students for their sheer talent and presentation but also ensured that he would most definitely use their designs for the interiors of his apartment which is currently in the design phase. IDS continues to break the norm of design education pan-India and is quickly becoming the pioneer in the same.
