Surathkal: The driver of a lorry sustained minor injuries in a road accident here, as the heavy vehicle traveling from Mangaluru to Udupi rammed into the remains of the toll gate near NIT-K at around 2.30 am on Sunday.

A pole that was a part of the toll gate remains got extracted with its base as an impact of the collision.

Mangaluru (North Division) Traffic Police officers have visited the accident spot for an inspection.

The coordinator of the Tollgate Protest Committee Muneer Katipalla has severely criticized the Dakshina Kannada district administration for its negligence at clearing the toll gate remains.

"The remains of the toll gate cannot be sighted easily in the dark, making things difficult and dangerous for drivers using the road. As a result, the place has become an accident zone. There is also the fear of the poles toppling on the road, causing further damage to life and property," he pointed out.

And added, "The elected representatives and the local and district officials continue to neglect such problems that are the outcome of unnecessarily installing a toll gate at Surathkal."

Vitla: Vitla Sub-inspector Ramakrishna has seized a vehicle that was allegedly transporting cattle illegally at Karai of Kolnadu village in Bantwal taluk. Two men in the vehicle, identified as Naveen and Chethan of Mandya, have reportedly been subjected to police questioning.

Police sources have said that the SI saw a vehicle transporting two cows and parked by the road. When he questioned the driver Naveen and Chethan, who were in the vehicle, about the cattle, he was told by the duo that the cows belonged to one Shankar, a resident of Channarayapatna. The men also told the SI that Shankar was supplying the cattle to a man in Salettur, identified as Shafi, allegedly for beef production.

Further, Naveen and Chethan confessed before the officer that they had gotten the cattle transport permit in others’ names, the sources have added.
