Udupi: In a controversial remark Udupi District BJP General Secretary Yashpal Suvarna on Tuesday threatened that the growing incidents of cow theft and cattle smuggling in the Coastal Karnataka would lead to a similar incident like that of ‘Adi Udupi Bettale Case’ wherein a father and his son were beaten and paraded naked by right wing activists in 2005 for allegedly buying calf.

Suvarna blamed state government and police department’s ‘collective failure’ to cap such incidents in the region.

“If Karnataka CM Kumaraswamy is really concerned about the people who have cattle he should come and stay with them in the Coastal Karnataka. He will get the idea of the kind of fear these people are living with every day. They live with the fear of their cattle being stolen every night by the goons who come with weapons. They also have political backing for their acts” he said.

He also supported the cause of cow vigilantes by lashing out at the administration and police for booking cases under Goonda Act against those who try to stop such acts. “Our voices are silenced by booking us under Goonda Act, these cow thieves are mostly from one particular community and hence they get support from a particular political circle” he added.

Further threatening the police department to seize the slaughterhouses in the region he said “If the police is worried about the peace and law and order in the region they should seize all the illegal slaughterhouses here. That’s when the situation will be stable in the region” while further demanding the exiling of people involved in cattle smuggling and theft cases.

“If the administration and police department does not take it seriously or initiate action in this regard it will lead to the chaos in the region like that of from 2003-2005. They should not let that happen” he said.

In 2005, the right-wing activists belonging from Hindu Yuva Sena, Bajrang Dal and VHP had thrashed a father and son for allegedly buying cattle, and had paraded them naked. The case had made the headlines at national level and was condemned from all corners except the right-wing groups.

Yashpal Suvarna was also named as the prime accused in the case in 2005 and was later let off.

Kochi (PTI): The Kerala High Court on Friday stayed for two weeks its single judge's interim order putting on hold for 15 days the release of 'The Kerala Story 2-Goes Beyond' film.

A bench of justices Sushrut Arvind Dharmadhikari and P V Balakrishnan passed the order on the appeal moved by the film's producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah late Thursday night, hours after the movie's release was stayed.

The bench had reserved order in the appeal on Thursday night.

The detailed order is awaited.

Shah in his appeal had claimed that the film does not harm or denigrate the state of Kerala or any religious community.

"The film only portrays a social evil," his lawyers had told the court.

Shah had also contended that if the film's release was put on hold, it would "financially finish" the producers as the movie is set to be screened in 1,500 theatres in India and over 300 abroad on February 27.

The single judge had stayed the release of the film on the ground that prima facie there was a manifest non-application of mind to the requirement of law by the censor board, CBFC.

The judge also said that "the possibility of communal disharmony or denigration of a community also being prima facie involved in the movie", its release without scrutiny by the higher authorities would be legally improper.

The court had further said that the content of the film's teaser has "a prima facie potential to distort public perception and disturb communal harmony".
