Lucknow: In an incident reported from Bahraich district, a woman fought with a crocodile and rescued her five-year-old son who had been grabbed by the reptile when he was playing in the waters of a canal.
The woman, identified as 40-year-old Maya from Dhakiya village in Bahraich, heard the cries of her son, Veeru, and found the crocodile dragging him into the canal. Eye witnesses have said that Maya rushed to her son’s rescue and fiercely fought with the crocodile for five minutes, till the reptile let go of her son and went back into the canal waters.
Veeru, who sustained serious injuries, and Maya, who was also injured, were immediately taken to a local health centre. Maya was reportedly given first aid although Veeru remained under treatment.
When asked about the incident, Maya said that she fought with all her strength against the predator that was dragging her son. Stating that the fight seemed endless, Maya said that she hit the reptile and also clawed it, refusing to let go and without thinking about her life. She added that, as she hit the crocodile with an iron rod, the predator released her son, much to her relief.
Rajkumar Singh, former village head of Dhakiya, is said to have informed the concerned authorities. As the incident has given rise to fear among the villagers to let their children approach the water body, the locals have asked the officers to provide greater security in the area near the canal.
