Udupi: A man from Udupi has been cheated of Rs 26.55 lakh in an online investment scam after being lured with promises of high returns in stock market trading, Deccan Herald reported.

According to police, the victim, Jayanth, came in contact with a person identifying himself as Karthik through Telegram nearly two years ago. On January 15, 2026, the accused contacted him via WhatsApp and persuaded him to invest money, promising attractive returns.

When the complainant expressed doubts about trusting him, the accused allegedly sent copies of an Aadhaar card, passport, and a photograph to gain credibility. The documents carried the name Mohammed Shafeeq, a resident of Kasaba Bengre in Mangaluru.

Believing the claims, the victim transferred Rs 26.55 lakh in multiple transactions to bank accounts provided by the accused. However, neither the promised returns nor the invested amount was returned.

Realising he had been cheated, Jayanth approached the police.

Based on the complaint, a case has been registered at the Udupi CEN Police Station under Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act and Section 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Police said further investigation is underway.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has taken a key decision on internal reservation for Scheduled Castes during a special Cabinet meeting held in Bengaluru.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced at Vidhana Soudha, along with Cabinet colleagues, that the government has decided to distribute the existing 15 per cent reservation available for Scheduled Castes among different groups.

According to the decision, 5.25 per cent reservation has been allocated to the Dalit Left-Hand community, 5.25 per cent to the Right-Hand community, and 4.5 per cent to other groups within the Scheduled Castes category.

The issue of internal reservation had remained sensitive due to differences between Left-Hand and Right-Hand Scheduled Caste communities.

An earlier Cabinet meeting had been called to discuss the matter, but it was postponed in view of the by-elections in Davanagere and Bagalkot constituencies.

The Cabinet has now taken a final decision on the issue.
