Mandya: A 17-year-old national-level cyclist from Puducherry, who was in town to attend a bicycle race here, reportedly drowned in a drain near Akkihebbalu, KR Pet taluk, on Saturday morning.
The body of bicyclist Alharsh was found on Sunday morning, sources said.
Alharsh and his friend reportedly had gone out to a place near the sports meet venue to relieve themselves on Saturday morning. Alharsh is said to have accidentally slipped and fallen into the drain, and was washed away.
The fire brigade staff members, who were informed of the incident, searched for the athlete’s body and found it on Sunday morning, said sources. Alharsh’s body is kept in the mortuary of the KR Pet taluk hospital.
The national-level bicycle polo sports meet was being organized by one Vasu, under the guidance of the BJP leaders, but there are apparently several loopholes in the organizational system.
While athletes from seven states are participating in the meet, they have not been provided proper toilet facilities. They are all, therefore, forced to answer the call of Nature beside the drain on the outskirts of the town, the citizens are learned to have alleged.
KR Pet Rural Police have registered a case and are investigating the matter.
