Madikeri, August 19: It seems the repair of roads in Kodagu district which was literally devastated by the rain fury may take months. The traffic movement between Madikeri and Mangaluru might take minimum one month to resume for light vehicles and heavy vehicles have to wait at least for another six months.

This would have long term consequences on the people of Kodagu who dependent on Mangaluru for education and healthcare and other activities. Mangaluru highway was damaged up to 37 km from Talattamane to Sampaje. PWD Minister HD Revanna said that the road repair works could be taken up only after the rain completely stopped.

As this road was completely blocked, traffic movement was allowed via alternative route Madikeri-Bhagamandala and Karike to Mangaluru. But it might take months to ply buses on Madikeri and Mangaluru highway, Revanna said.

Because of landslides, the Madikeri- Somwarpet road was also completely damaged and it would take minimum two months to repair it. Without the stoppage of rain completely, no repair works could be taken up in Kodagu district. So, the people have to wait till November to come back to normalcy, he said.

The Mangaluru-Hassan Milk Federation have supplied 30,000 litre milk, 5,000 biscuits, 200 quintal rice and tur dal, one thousand box drinking water to the flood victims. Cooking oil and cloths would also be supplied to the victims, he said.

Dhaka, Nov 26: A lawyer was killed on Tuesday during clashes between the security personnel and followers of a Hindu community leader, who was denied bail and sent to jail by a Bangladesh court, according to local media reports.

The victim was identified as Saiful Islam, a 35-year-old assistant public prosecutor and a member of the Chattogram District Bar Association, the Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported.

Citing Dr Nibedita Ghosh, a duty doctor at the emergency department of Chittagong Medical College Hospital, the paper said that six others were injured in the clashes that erupted after Chattogram’s Sixth Metropolitan Magistrate court denied bail to prominent Hindu leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, arrested on sedition charges.

Nazim Uddin Chowdhury, president of the Chittagong Lawyers' Association, said that protesters dragged a lawyer from beneath his chamber and hacked him to death.

As Das was being taken away in a police van, he addressed the crowd through a hand mike, urging them to remain calm.

Around 3 pm, the law enforcement agencies resorted to sound grenades, tear gas shells, and baton charges, dispersing the protesters.

Deputy Commissioner of City Police Liaquat Ali confirmed one death but said they were still investigating the cause.

The Daily Star newspaper reported that at least 10 people, including journalists, were injured during the clash.
