Bengaluru: The class 10 (SSLC) exams in Karnataka will reportedly be monitored using Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powdered CCTV cameras, which is designed to detect any malpractices or irregularities at examination centres.

The Karnataka School Examination and Assessment Board (KSEAB) has decided to install AI-powered CCTV cameras at select centres deemed "sensitive" and "hypersensitive" across the state, as well as at all centres in the Bengaluru North and South Educational Districts, as reported by The Hindu on Wednesday.

KSEAB director H.N. Gopalakrishna said that they will take up a pilot project in collaboration with Microsoft, which will provide customised software for monitoring the exam centres.

Over sixty invigilators were suspended and many students were debarred for engaging in various forms of malpractice during the 2023 SSLC exams. Following this, the KSEAB introduced webcasting across all exam centres in 2024, leading to a severe drop in the results pushing the board to provide grace marks, indicating how prevalent irregularities were in these exams, the report mentioned.

However, the manual process of live monitoring through webcasting was resource-intensive and prone to errors. To address these challenges, the KSEAB is turning to AI to monitor the webcast.

The AI software will flag malpractices, fed to the software earlier, from the video feed. If it detects any irregularities, it will immediately send detailed reports, including photographs and video clips, to the examination centre chief, district Deputy Commissioners, chairman of KSEAB, among other officials, the report added.

Karnataka’s SSLC examinations are scheduled to be held from March 21 to April 4, 2025.
