Shivamogga: Accusing the district administration of overlooking his request, a young man reportedly set his bike on fire in an expression of anger in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on Tuesday.

The enraged young man has been identified as Raju (29), a resident of Dr Ambedkar Nagar near Gaadikoppa, it is learned.

Raju reportedly set his bike on fire in front of the deputy commissioner’s office on Monday afternoon and expressed his anger against the officials in the administration. The bike is said to have been engulfed in flames in a matter of minutes.

The officials who saw the burning bike immediately informed the fire brigade. Soon after, the fire brigade unit arrived at the location and extinguished the fire.

Reason behind the incident: The residents of the Dr Ambedkar Colony had occupied the land meant for the Tunga lift irrigation scheme and built their homes. Based on an order from the court, their homes had been cleared later. The residents of the area had, on the occasion, poured petrol on their bodies and attempted suicide. Thereafter, they gathered in front of the deputy commissioner’s office and staged protests at night.

Disheartened and enraged that nobody was working to provide the people of the Colony with justice, Raju, who earned his livelihood selling plastic flowers, reportedly set his bike on fire in protest.

The Jayanagar station police have detained Raju concerning the case, it is learned.
