Bengaluru: An FIR has been registered at the Sarjapur Police Station against 25 ABVP activists for allegedly entering the premises of Azim Premji University and creating a disturbance during a protest on Tuesday evening.
The protest was staged to oppose a debate organised by the All-India Students’ Association (AISA) SPARK student wing, which ABVP claimed portrayed Kashmiri soldiers in a derogatory manner.
ABVP members had gathered outside the university and announced plans to submit a memorandum to the Union Minister seeking cancellation of the university’s recognition.
According to police, tensions escalated when some activists allegedly entered the campus, smeared ink on the university nameplate, and engaged in unruly behaviour. Pro-university students also staged a counter-protest inside the campus.
Based on a complaint filed by the university’s Security Head, S. Wilson, the FIR includes allegations of forced entry, issuing threats to security, Jagadish, Chandan Mahalik, Chattar Bahadur, Naresh, Sripathi and Harish, and assaulting a first-year BA student, Muhammad Ali Ahmed.
Police said 25 ABVP activists were taken into custody and later produced before a court. They have since filed applications seeking regular bail before the Anekal court.
Further investigation is under way.
