Bengaluru: Residents of an apartment complex in Bengaluru confronted a former army officer and his wife after the couple allegedly used communal slurs against a Muslim man, calling him “Pakistani” and “terrorist” after learning about his religious identity.
A video of the confrontation has gone viral on social media, showing residents gathered outside the couple’s apartment and strongly objecting to the remarks. Those present can be heard saying such behaviour would not be tolerated in Karnataka.
In the video, one resident tells the couple, ““Yeh tumara baap ka ghar nai hai. Yeh Karnataka hai (This isn’t your father’s house. This is Karnataka),” said one of the men leading the residents.” The man then responds by saying he had worked in the Defence Department and was an army officer.
Another resident is heard replying that if he had served in the army, he should be more patriotic. He also questioned how the man’s wife could call someone a terrorist merely after asking if he was Muslim.
The former officer attempted to downplay the issue, saying the remarks may have been made during an argument when tempers were high. “Woh jaghde me hogaya. Abhi chod do (It was during the argument, leave it be now)”
Residents also told the couple not to spread divisive ideas in what they described as a secular-minded state. In the video, one of them says people of all faiths Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians live together, and no one should divide society on the basis of religion, caste or creed.
Following repeated demands from those gathered, the woman later apologised for using the alleged communal slurs.
The video ends with residents warning the couple against any repeat of such behaviour. It was not immediately clear whether a police complaint had been filed in connection with the incident.
