Bengaluru: Kannada film actor Lakshman, who was known for his portrayal of supporting and negative characters, died of heart attack in the city on Monday morning, aged 77.

Lakshman, who had been fighting age-related health problems for some time, developed chest pain on Sunday afternoon and was admitted to a private hospital in Nagarbhavi. Since the doctor, who read the ECG report declared him to be fine, Lakshman returned home.

On Monday morning, the senior actor died of a heart attack.

His body has been kept at his residence in Moodalpalya, for people to pay their respects.

Lakshman, who was a native of Bengaluru, worked in a factory before joining the film industry. He acted in more than 200 movies and worked with Raj Kumar, Vishnuvardhan, Ambareesh and Rajanikanth, among other stars. He is considered the most popular actor in a negative role opposite ‘Rebel Star’ Ambareesh. Lakshman had struck a note with the audience with his fine performance as supporting actor in movies like ‘Yajamana’, ‘Sooryavamsha’ and ‘Olavina Udugore’.

Many prominent persons from the film industry have expressed their sorrow at the death of the senior actor and have offered their condolences to Lakshman’s family.

Kolkata (PTI): Seven people were arrested from the Parnashree area in the southern part of the city for allegedly running a fake call centre, a police officer said on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, police raided a house on Netaji Subhas Road on Friday night and found the fake call centre operating from the ground floor, he said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had set up a bogus company using forged documents and posed as employees of an antivirus firm to call citizens in the US, the officer said.

"The callers would gain the trust of victims and then use remote access to take control of their phones or other digital devices. The accused allegedly siphoned off large sums of money, running into millions of dollars, from victims' accounts," he said.

Five laptops, two WiFi routers, six mobile phones and four headsets were seized from the accused, he said, adding that the seven are being questioned to ascertain the full extent of the racket and to identify others involved.
