Bengaluru: Seven individuals have been arrested by the Yelahanka Police for allegedly impersonating government officials and robbing a city-based professor of Rs 1.5 crore in cash and gold ornaments worth Rs 2.5 lakh.

The arrested are Shankarappa, Rajendra Jain, Hemanth Jain, Srinivas Gowda, Jagan Mohan, Srinivas and Kiran Jain, as reported by Deccan Herald on Sunday.

Police investigations revealed that Shankarappa, a former driver of the victim, Giriraj Kumar, was the mastermind behind the heist. Shankarappa became aware of the large amount of cash Kumar had received following a recent real estate transaction and conspired with his associates—many of whom are reportedly involved in the real estate business.

Four members of the gang entered Kumar’s residence in Vinayaka Nagar, posing as officials from a so-called “government enforcement wing” on September 19. They threatened Kumar, his wife, and his mother, while four others waited outside, keeping watch.

The suspects searched the house and fled with the documents and a suitcase containing cash. Kumar told the police that the suspects had fled with Rs 1.50 crore cash and 2.50 lakh worth of gold ornaments, added the report.

Following a police investigation, all seven accused were apprehended, and Rs 1.27 crore in cash was recovered. One suspect remains at large. The arrested individuals are in judicial custody.

“During subsequent raids at the premises of the suspect, the seals, documents, visiting cards were recovered. A separate case will be registered,” DH quoted Seemant Kumar Singh, Bengaluru city police commissioner, as saying.

Bengaluru (PTI): Power bills for consumers under the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited (BESCOM) will go up from May 1, following an order issued by the Karnataka Electricity Regulatory Commission (KERC) on Friday.

The hike comes after KERC allowed the BESCOM to recover a revenue deficit of Rs 2,068 crore incurred in 2024-25, from the consumers.

As a result, for every unit of electricity consumed in 2024-25, the customers will be charged an additional 56 paise, it said.

"BESCOM shall calculate, for each of the active consumers of FY2024-25 the amount to be recovered based on their actual energy consumption during FY2024-25. Such amount shall be recovered during FY 2026-27 in equal monthly instalments, to be called as 'FY25 True up Charges', commencing from the first meter reading date falling on or after 1 May 2026 and concluding with the reading date ending on 30 April 2027," the order said.

"It is further ordered that BESCOM shall maintain a separate head of account, allocated for the purpose, to record the adjustment of the said amount to ensure full recovery of the deficit," it added.

Similarly Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation Limited (CESC) has also recorded a revenue deficit of Rs 121.71 crore and can collect an additional 15 paisa per unit for consumption in 2024-25, official sources said.
