Bhatkal: Taking note of the unprecedented crisis the state is in amidst one of the worst COVID crisis, a lawyer hailing from Bhatkal Syed Imran Lanka on Monday wrote an open letter to the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka blaming the state government and alleging negligence on its part in dealing with the deadly virus.

Imran in the letter added that the government had failed to discharge its duties with due diligence and that has resulted in the sufferings of thousands of people across the state. He urged the Chief Justice of Karnataka High Court to treat his letter as suo moto Public Interest Litigation and hold the government liable for Criminal Negligence.

“India has been caught unprepared as the second wave of Covid-19 ravaged cross-sections of Indian society, the responsibility lies with the Government who seemed to have ignored all warnings and suggestions issued by the experts,” Imran wrote in the letter.

He further demanded that the state government be directed to pay adequate compensation to the family of victims who died due to a shortage of oxygen or failures of other health infrastructure facilities.

“With humility, I beg you to treat this as a suo moto Public Interest Litigation and hold the State Government liable of Criminal Negligence and direct the state government to ensure, adequate compensation is paid to the family of the victims who died due to shortage of oxygen or failures of other health infrastructure facilities and to protect the Fundamental Rights of the citizens as nothing short of protection of Human rights is at stake,” Imran wrote in the letter.

His other demand added that the actions of state government should be monitored regarding the measures to protect the human rights of the marginalized during the lockdown.

“To direct and monitor the actions of State Government with regard to measures to protect the Human rights of marginalized and poorest of poor in the times of lockdown amidst the pandemic” the letter read.

“Sir, in these vulnerable circumstances the judiciary is the only light of hope of citizens and laying the trust in the judicial fraternity of our nation and the future of judicial protection of Fundamental Rights and human rights at the grass-root level.

“The Judiciary in India has successfully acted as an “Institution of Justice” for every citizen, acting as a custodian of Indian Constitution, guardian of human rights and has never wavered in upholding constitutional values” Imran’s letter stated

Bhadohi (PTI): Like lakhs of people who thronged Prayagraj on Sunday to have a holy dip at the Sangam during the Maha Kumbh, 22-year-old Pravesh Yadav too arrived in the city to take part in the ritual bathing that many believe washes off one's sins.

However, destiny had other plans for Yadav, who was allegedly involved in liquor smuggling and had evaded arrest since July 2023, as he was apprehended by cops in the Civil Lines area of Prayagraj owing to strong police surveillance, a police official said on Sunday.

Elaborating further about the arrest, Superintendent of Police of Bhadohi Abhimanyu Manglik said that Pravesh Yadav is a resident of Alwar district of Rajasthan and was absconding for one-and-half years.

Mangalik said during the checking of vehicles on National Highway-19 on July 29, 2023, adulterated liquor meant for smuggling from Alwar to Bihar was recovered and Pradeep Yadav and Raj Domoliya were arrested from the Unj police station area in Bhadohi. However, Pravesh Yadav escaped from the spot. All are residents of Alwar district and were involved in smuggling illegal liquor in Bihar for a long time., he alleged.

A case was registered against them under sections 419 (Punishment for cheating by personation), 420 (Cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 468 (Forgery for purpose of cheating), 471 (Using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), 272 (Adulteration of food or drink intended for sale), 273 (Sale of noxious food or drink) and 207 (Fraudulent claim to property to prevent its seizure as forfeited or in execution) of the IPC, Excise Act and Gangster Act, police said.

The officer said that Yadav reached Prayagraj to take a holy dip but was arrested by police due to effective surveillance.
