Bidar: A lecturer, who was deceived after she invested her money online, allegedly committed suicide by jumping into a well in Islampur village of Basavakalyana taluk, Bidar district.

Arathi Kanate, 28, who committed suicide, was a lecturer at a local college, according to sources.

She made an acquaintance online, who got her to invest her money, after convincing her to take his offer. Believing his offer to be true and with an intention to double up her money, Kanate reportedly invested up to Rs 2.5 lakh of her money. The man later convinced her that, if she submitted an additional Rs 82,000, he would ensure that she also got a job, along with returns for the investment.

Having invested such huge sums of money without informing her family and having lost it all, the lecturer committed suicide, the police have said.

She also wrote about the online acquaintance in her death note, they added.

A case has been registered at the Basavakalyana Police Station.
