Bijapur 29 Sept: District Armed Police’s Bomb Squad received an unusual and strange request from the locals a couple of days back. The squad which normally has the job to check the presence of any detonators or any arms for the safety of VIPs was requested by the people not to find any explosive objects but to locate a manhole of an underground drainage system.

This peculiar request was made by people of at least three localities of the city to the DAR police with the help of social activist, Azeem Inamdar.

The need for taking service from Bomb Squad cropped up to locate the manhole after the major blockage of the drainage line connecting at least four localities of the city.

“Because of the choking of the pipeline, the filthy water entered at least in two thousand houses of Halli colony, Tipu Nagar, Alika Roza, Balsing colony and Naubhagh of the city. The people were facing a miserable situation after stinking water started flowing into their houses. And an immediate action was required to clear the blockade for smoother flowing of drainage water”, said Azeem Inamdar.

He explained that when they contacted the City Corporation cleaning staff, it was then that they realized about a major obstacle in cleaning the choked drainage.

“We found that after laying the pipeline for underground drainage, the contractor laid tar road over the pipeline without raising the height of manhole to road level for easy location of the manhole.  It was the job of the City Corporation to see that height is raised for proper identification of manholes. Since they failed in their duty, the contractor constructed the manholes leaving behind no trace of any manhole”, Inamdar said.

He said that when they were completely clueless about the location of the manholes which were essential to use machines to clean up the checked drainage, they had to look for a solution to find out the manhole.

“It was practically impossible to keep digging up thousands of feet of road to locate the manhole. It was that time, a strange idea kindle that we could use a metal detector to locate the manhole “, he said.

Inamdar said that he talked to a couple of engineering colleges who normally keep such machines for students for practical purposes, but no machine was available.

“Finally, the only place left for such machines is; bomb squad. For that, we requested Gandhi Chowk police station and Superintendent of Police with the help of City Corporation to provide us service of bomb squad to detect manholes”, he said.

Inamdar said that initially, even the DAR police were a little surprised to hear the request, but when they requested, telling about the need, they finally agreed and got two manholes located using the machines.

“Since they could not locate the third one because of the heavy presence of metal items around the area, at least, they gave us a link to the third one. It will make our job a little easier now to locate the third manhole and clean up the choked drainage”, he said.

Meanwhile, admitting the mistake of City Corporation, Harsha Shetty, and the City Corporation Commissioner said that the previous officials should have ensured that manholes were clearly marked to avoid this inconvenience.

“However, since it has been identified, we will try to raise the height of it to make sure that the covering of the manholes is visible. It will help in future to clear the clogged drainages easily”, Shetty said.
