Bengaluru: In a concerning incident, a Bolero vehicle transporting a significant load of tomatoes was stolen near Chikkajala village, located near Yelahanka in Bengaluru, on Saturday morning. This incident comes amid a surge in tomato prices nationwide and a rise in reported cases of tomato theft, causing farmers to guard their fields around the clock.
According to the details of the incident, a farmer was transporting his freshly grown tomatoes from Hiriyur to Kolar on Saturday. While en route, a car with three individuals began following the Bolero vehicle carrying the tomato cargo. The occupants of the car intercepted the Bolero in the limits of the RMC Yard police station, alleging that the farmer's vehicle had collided with their car near Peenya. As the argument escalated, the farmer was reportedly subjected to assault.
The miscreants, who demanded money, seized control of the Bolero vehicle and took both the farmer and the driver along with them, heading towards Chikkajala. However, upon realizing that there was no money to be obtained, they left the farmer near Chikkajala and fled the scene with the driver and the entire load of tomatoes still in the vehicle.
In response to the incident, a case has been registered at the RMC Ward Police Station. Police are examining CCTV footage to identify and locate the culprits involved in the tomato theft.

Tumakuru (PTI): Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara on Saturday said his recent remarks on the demolition of properties linked to those involved in narcotics trade were "misunderstood and misinterpreted".
His clarification follows remarks made two days ago on the government's uncompromising crackdown on the drug menace, including action against properties linked to foreign nationals allegedly involved in drug trafficking.
"It is unfortunate. It is taken in the wrong sense. I didn't mean that tomorrow itself I am going to send bulldozers and demolish the houses. That was not my intention. It was wrongly taken," he told reporters here.
Responding to Congress MLC K Abdul Jabbar's question in the legislative council on the growing drug menace in Bengaluru, Davangere and coastal districts, the minister on Thursday detailed the extensive enforcement measures initiated since the Congress government assumed office.
Pointing to the involvement of some foreign nationals, the minister had said, "Many foreign students from African countries have come to Karnataka. They are into the drug business. We catch them and register cases against them, but they want the case to be registered because once the case is registered, we cannot deport them."
"We have gone to the extent of demolishing the rented building where they stay," he had said.
